5 Simple Ways to Take Your Hospitality to the Extra Mile

On January 1st, 2023, we had just finished our Cross-Over Service. I couldn’t get back to my not-so-safe neighbourhood at 2 a.m. Plus, I had been in that town for barely three months.

Well, fast forward to the part where I now have to spend the night at my Pastor’s place, and one of his daughters, after showing me to my room, shows up with a nightwear… my mind went like “ah ah… na so wuna dey do for here?” As simple as that gesture could be, it really stood out for me and went a long way to make me FEEL AT HOME—she had gone the extra mile!

As you might have rightly guessed, I got up later that morning to find her making breakfast for me ☺.

This reminds me of Father Abraham in Hospitality Heroes Spotlight episode 1.

Considering the many other scenarios people might experience, these practical tips, which I’ve gathered over time, will take your hospitality game to the next level (the extra mile)!

1. Have Spare Outfits at Hand

This is not about opening a boutique in your home (though you could if you have the means), but the extra singlet, shorts, underwear, slippers, and towel in your home can make a difference for a guest in need.

Keep in mind that you must not get all of those at once, especially as the list is not exhaustive. You’ll be amazed at what intentional and consistent effort can do.

2. Prepare a Welcome Package for Overnight Guests

Having someone share your place/space is one thing; it’s another to make your guests feel truly welcome. If your guest is staying for a night or more, a welcome note (with their name) or a Bible verse note may be a good way to earn one more smile. Please place it where you know they will see it, preferably just before going to bed.

If your budget permits, you can create a complete package by adding a toothbrush, toothpaste, or a sanitary pad, if applicable.

3. Keep Snacks Handy for Guests Between Meals

When I was much younger and would travel to my village for holidays, there was this particular auntie I loved to visit. I’ll be honest: one of my major motivating factors was that she always had food at home and no specific eating hours, so I wouldn’t have to starve myself.

For various reasons, not everyone eats at the same time, and some guests may be uncomfortable asking for food outside of meal hours. Providing snacks, such as fruit, pastries, and nuts, allows employees to snack without feeling awkward about waiting for the next meal.

4. Make Books Available

Sometimes, a guest might want to unwind with a good read. Keeping a small selection of books, devotionals, or magazines on hand can be a thoughtful touch. You never know—they might read a life-changing paragraph in your home!

5. Spend Time with Your Guest

Beyond offering physical comfort, genuine hospitality is also about presence. Unless discussed otherwise, make an effort to spend quality time with your guest—engage in meaningful conversations, share a meal, or simply relax together. A warm presence is what truly makes a guest feel welcome!

In an era when people get busier daily, giving out piece of ourselves that belongs to others takes intentionality. Make your guests know that you have (figuratively) carried their matter on your head, but most significantly, let everything about your hosting atmosphere point them to GOD.

As demanding as that could be, I firmly believe that there is a part of us that belongs to others (and vice versa):

Welcome to this space where we learn how to show up for others and, most importantly, how to point them to Jesus through our hospitality.
